Apple foldable iPhone faces shipment delay risk
Apple may delay shipments of its first foldable iPhone after setbacks emerged in the engineering test phase, Nikkei Asia reported.
The first shipments could slip by months as Apple resolves the issues and makes necessary adjustments.
Nikkei reported in January that Apple was expected to focus on delivering its first foldable iPhone and two non-folding models with upgraded cameras and larger displays for a flagship launch in the second half of 2026.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The foldable iPhone’s engineering hurdles go far beyond a simple hinge
- The “engineering test phase” refers to pre-production checkpoints like the Engineering Validation Test (EVT) and Design Validation Test (DVT), which devices usually clear before mass production starts 1.
- Apple’s hardest problem is a foldable display with a “nearly invisible” crease, or even no visible crease, an issue that has persisted in Samsung foldables across several generations 2.
- One approach under development uses a metal “dispersion plate” beneath the panel plus a hinge built from liquid metal, an amorphous alloy. Supply-chain sources say Apple has held exclusive rights to Liquidmetal material technology since 2010 3, 1.
- A thin build remains a priority, with a target near 4.5mm when unfolded. That goal may drive a switch from Face ID (Apple’s facial-recognition login system) to a Touch ID fingerprint sensor in the side button to save space 2.
A potential delay tests a supply chain already investing heavily
- Suppliers have started spending money, with hinge maker Yian Technology planning a 120 million yuan (US$17.4 million) capital increase for its liquid metal subsidiary to meet new orders. The move comes amid market rumors of a North American customer launching a foldable device 4.
- Any slip could shake investor sentiment, since shares of Lens Technology plus Luxshare Precision have climbed on expectations of foldable iPhone supply work 4.
- Order plans discussed in supply-chain circles run from 15 million to 20 million units. Samsung Display is expected to make about 7 million to 8 million foldable panels for Apple in 2026 4.
- Extra time also benefits rivals like Samsung, which can keep tuning foldable hardware while Apple works through these design constraints 2.
