Apple faces major leadership shake-up as senior leaders exit

Apple is experiencing its largest leadership shake-up in decades as several senior executives and engineers leave the company.

Recent departures include the heads of AI, interface design, general counsel, and governmental affairs.

Many AI engineers have joined rivals such as Meta and OpenAI, raising concerns about Apple’s ability to compete in AI.

John Giannandrea is set to step down after delays and setbacks in Apple’s AI efforts, while Johny Srouji has told Tim Cook he is seriously considering leaving.

Apple has recruited Jennifer Newstead to replace retiring general counsel Kate Adams, and other long-serving executives, including Lisa Jackson and Jeff Williams, are also retiring.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Apple’s chip plans face risk without a clear successor for Srouji

  • Johny Srouji runs the silicon and hardware technologies groups for Apple’s custom chips across all products 1. The teams also handle batteries and cameras 1. They cover storage controllers, sensors, and displays 1. His exit would raise delivery risk because he built one of the strongest silicon teams and has shaped the roadmap since 2008, when he led the A4, the first in-house system on a chip 1.
  • The lack of a visible succession plan creates doubt over whether A-series (for iPhone and iPad) plus M-series (for Mac) chips can keep their pace while hitting product windows. The strength of his direct reports and their ability to deliver without him will decide whether Apple’s silicon edge stays intact or starts to fade.

Slow Apple Intelligence rollout gives room for third-party AI apps on iOS

  • Apple Intelligence is arriving in phases 2. iOS 18.1 landed in October 2024 with Writing Tools plus a redesigned Siri, then iOS 18.2 added Image Playground, Genmoji 23. Major Siri upgrades such as personal context awareness and onscreen understanding are not expected until iOS 18.4 3. Language support for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, plus eight more is planned for 2025 with no dates yet 3.
  • AI assistant, keyboard, and productivity developers can step in during this long rollout. Launch near iOS 18.4 or focus on China, Japan, and Korea where language support lags to build habits before Apple’s features land.
