Apple faces another AI exec exit as senior leader Walker departs

Robby Walker, a senior executive overseeing AI at Apple, plans to leave the company next month.

He previously led the Siri team before shifting to develop an AI-powered web search tool expected to launch in 2026.

Walker currently leads the Answers, Information and Knowledge group.

Oversight of Siri was moved to software chief Craig Federighi after delays in planned updates.

His departure follows a series of exits from Apple’s AI division, including Ruoming Pang and Frank Chu, who both joined Meta.

Apple’s stock has dropped nearly 7% in 2025, with AI challenges cited as a factor.

Apple declined to comment on the executive departure.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Apple’s AI executive exodus reflects broader tech talent retention challenges

  • Walker’s departure continues a pattern of senior AI talent leaving Apple, including Ruoming Pang who joined Meta Platforms1.
  • This trend aligns with the tech industry’s highest turnover rate at 13.2%, where Apple’s median employee tenure is just two years according to LinkedIn data2.
  • The competitive market for AI expertise has intensified poaching between major tech companies, with 44% of tech workers planning to leave their roles within a year primarily due to limited career advancement opportunities3.
  • Walker’s role reduction over recent months—with his duties and staff dramatically cut—suggests internal restructuring may have accelerated his decision to leave1.
  • The fact that Pang moved to Meta specifically indicates how competitors are actively targeting Apple’s AI talent during a period when the company faces public scrutiny over AI development delays.

Search competition intensifies as Apple develops ChatGPT rival

  • Walker’s work on Apple’s new AI-powered web search system positions the company to compete directly with Perplexity and ChatGPT, scheduled for next year1.
  • Perplexity AI has gained traction as a search engine alternative that focuses on providing accurate, real-time answers rather than general conversation, creating a specific competitive target for Apple4.
  • Apple’s move into AI search represents a strategic shift from its traditional partnership approach with Google, suggesting the company sees search as critical to its AI strategy.
  • The timing of Walker’s departure—while leading this crucial search project—could potentially delay Apple’s timeline to compete in the rapidly evolving AI search market.
