Apple expands hardware chief’s role in CEO succession talks

Apple has expanded the role of its hardware chief, John Ternus, to include design responsibilities.

Ternus, currently senior vice president of hardware engineering, will now oversee both hardware and software design teams, acting as a bridge between design staff and Apple’s executive leadership.

The change is not publicly announced, and design teams still report directly to CEO Tim Cook.

At 50, Ternus is seen as a potential future CEO candidate.

Apple has not commented on the development.

Ternus has previously presented new Macs at product launches and is regarded as a key decision-maker on product strategy.

The company is also seeing leadership changes, with some senior executives considering departures amid ongoing succession planning discussions.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Apple’s succession planning has created an unusual design oversight structure

  • Apple’s design teams are now overseen by hardware chief John Ternus, yet formal reporting lines are still set to CEO Tim Cook, with authority left unclear. Employees have called it a “strange arrangement.”
  • Ternus’ “executive sponsor” role has been framed as limited. Final calls on design have been reached through consensus for several years among multiple Apple executives, including software engineering chief Craig Federighi and marketing chief Greg Joswiak.
  • The shift has not been framed as a formal, board-approved succession step. The change was made quietly, and no internal signs have been cited that Cook is preparing to step down soon.

Apple’s design departures may create recruiting opportunities, but claims of an “exodus” need tighter attribution

  • Alan Dye, Apple’s chief of human interface design, left for Meta Platforms Inc. in December. Bloomberg wrote that many staffers who worked under Jony Ive have since joined Ive’s design studio LoveFrom or startups such as OpenAI.
  • Rivals may try to hire seasoned Apple designers. Any claim of a broad or ongoing “talent drain” should track only what has been specifically described.
  • Meta has set up a new creative studio led by Dye to combine design, fashion, and technology. He will work on devices such as headsets and glasses, including AI features 1.
