Apple expands ChatGPT deal in AI push at WWDC 2025

Apple unveiled new AI-powered features at Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025 to enhance user experiences across its devices.

A standout update is live translation in Messages, Phone, and FaceTime, offering real-time multilingual communication.

Another addition is an on-screen content analysis feature in iOS 26, enabling users to review content and access ChatGPT or Google searches directly.

Other features include a “Workout Buddy” voice guide for Apple Watch, custom emoji creation, smarter group chat suggestions, and improved Wallet functions.

Apple is enabling developers to integrate AI-powered tools into their apps using on-device AI models.

The new features are set to roll out this fall with updates to iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, and visionOS 26.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Apple’s privacy-first AI strategy creates both competitive advantages and limitations

Apple’s approach to AI emphasizes on-device processing and privacy, which contrasts sharply with competitors’ more cloud-dependent models.

This strategy centers around a 3-billion parameter language model that operates primarily offline, enhancing user data security but potentially limiting AI capabilities 1.

The privacy-centric approach has created development challenges, particularly evident in Apple’s image editing tools, which testing shows are less effective than Samsung’s and Google’s alternatives 2.

Apple’s cautious implementation has led to investor concerns, with stock prices declining following the WWDC announcements as analysts questioned whether the company’s privacy constraints will hamper its competitiveness in the rapidly evolving AI landscape 3.

Despite these limitations, Apple’s focus on privacy remains a key differentiator in the market, allowing the company to maintain its brand promise while gradually introducing AI features that don’t compromise user data.

2️⃣ Apple’s AI catch-up journey reflects its historical struggles with AI development

While Apple pioneered voice assistants with Siri’s 2011 launch, the company has since fallen behind competitors in AI capabilities despite numerous acquisitions.
