Apple debuts $599 iPhone 17e with new AI features
Apple announced the iPhone 17e, a lower-priced addition to the iPhone 17 lineup that will be available for pre-order on March 4 and in stores from March 11, starting at US$599 with 256GB of storage.
The phone runs on the A19 chip that the company claimed is up to twice as fast as the C1 in the iPhone 16e, with a 48MP Fusion camera that can capture 48MP stills, offers an optical-quality 2x telephoto, supports Night mode, and records 4K Dolby Vision video.
Apple said the 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display features Ceramic Shield 2 with three times better scratch resistance than the prior generation. The phone is IP68 rated, and it supports MagSafe, Qi2, and USB‑C charging to about 50% in 30 minutes.
Running on the latest iOS 26, the iPhone 17e is built for Apple Intelligence. Users can access smart features like Live Translation and visual search, alongside essential satellite safety services for emergencies and messaging.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The iPhone 17e is defined by its tradeoffs
- The iPhone 17e runs on the A19 chip, yet it has one fewer graphics core than the iPhone 17 version, so graphics speed drops a bit 1.
- Apple keeps the older screen notch instead of Dynamic Island, and the 6.1-inch OLED display stays at a 60 Hz refresh rate while budget Android phones offer 120 Hz 1.
- The new C1X modem boosts speed, though it skips the N1 networking chip used in iPhone 17 models, so it misses newer standards such as Bluetooth 6, WiFi 7, and Thread 1.
- Those cuts help Apple hold the $599 price, aiming at hesitant buyers who want modern basics without paying for higher-end extras 1.
Apple’s budget phone shifts upgrade timing and parts choices
- MagSafe plus the A19 chip makes the 17e a stronger pick than discounted older iPhones, giving people on an iPhone 12 or 13 a cleaner upgrade path 1.
- The tier also widens Apple’s in-house modem rollout: iPhone 17e uses the C1X modem, following the C1 modem in iPhone 16e 2.
- Apple lines up the 17e against midrange rivals like Google’s Pixel lineup and Samsung phones, while saving top-end features for pricier models and the Pro line’s margins 1 3.
