Apple appoints Tata for iPhone, MacBook repairs in India

Apple has appointed Tata Group to manage after-sales repairs for iPhones and MacBook devices in India, replacing Taiwan’s Wistron Corporation.

Tata will conduct repairs from its iPhone assembly facility in Karnataka, marking a significant expansion of its partnership with Apple.

Tata already assembles iPhones and produces components in three facilities in southern India.

India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market, has seen a surge in iPhone sales, with 11 million units sold in 2024.

This represents a 7% market share, highlighting growing demand for repair services.

Apple’s decision to increase collaboration with Tata aligns with its strategy to diversify manufacturing away from China.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ India’s booming smartphone repair market drives strategic shift

The Tata-Apple repair partnership taps into a massive growth opportunity in smartphone repair services globally.

The global smartphone repair market was valued at approximately $215.2 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow at around 5% annually through 2032, driven by increasing smartphone adoption and the rising cost of new devices 1.

This expansion is even more pronounced in specific segments, with some market analyses projecting growth from $4.92 billion in 2024 to $12.57 billion by 2032, representing a compound annual growth rate of 12.4% 2.

The repair market’s growth reflects changing consumer behavior, with the average global smartphone replacement cycle now reaching 21 months as users keep devices longer and seek repairs rather than replacements 1.

For Apple, establishing a dedicated repair infrastructure with Tata creates a foundation for potential future refurbished device sales in India, mirroring its successful approach in the United States as noted by analyst Prabhu Ram in the original article.

2️⃣ Apple’s premium strategy finding success despite market headwinds

Apple’s partnership with Tata comes amid remarkable growth for the company in a challenging Indian smartphone market.
