ANZ Bank plans AI agents to boost productivity

ANZ Bank plans to introduce AI agents into its operations to boost productivity, according to Gerard Florian, the group executive of technology.

Speaking at a Salesforce event in Sydney, he called it the bank’s “single-biggest change program” for the coming years.

Initially, AI agents will assist business bankers by generating company and sector reports to improve client meeting prep and engagement. Future uses may include automating tasks like triaging loan applications.

Two ANZ platforms, Plus and Transactive, are built to support “agentic” AI, allowing tasks to be completed with minimal human input.

Salesforce, whose Agentforce software is used by ANZ, has launched AI tools for financial services to automate tasks such as presenting loan options and preparing investment reviews.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Australian banks racing to deploy agentic AI reveals competitive pressure

ANZ’s AI strategy is part of a larger competitive trend among Australia’s “Big Four” banks, who are all exploring agentic AI technologies.

Westpac pioneered this approach in February 2025 through its partnership with Accenture, where it demonstrated efficiency gains by reducing a software migration task from six days to just one hour 1.

Commonwealth Bank has already developed multi-agent solutions for generating personalized content and automating testing, while NAB is exploring similar applications to improve customer experiences 2.

This reflects the banking sector’s evolution beyond basic chatbots to more autonomous systems, with a significant portion of banking interactions now occurring through digital channels 3.

The focus on AI deployment suggests banks view this technology as critical for maintaining competitive advantage, particularly as traditional differentiators in digital banking become increasingly standardized.

2️⃣ AI productivity gains present massive economic opportunity with clear ROI

The financial impact of AI in banking is projected to be substantial, with industry estimates suggesting AI could deliver up to $1 trillion in additional value annually for the global banking sector 4.

This explains why ANZ’s technology executive describes their AI rollout as “the single-biggest change program” the bank will undertake, as productivity enhancements of 20-30% have been documented in early banking implementations 1.
