AnyMind Group buys Japan’s beauty distributor for retail push

AnyMind Group has agreed to acquire Sun Smile, a Japan-based distributor and brand owner in the beauty and personal care sector.

The deal marks AnyMind’s entry into offline retail and will help connect its social media, ecommerce, and nationwide store distribution operations in Japan through an AI-powered online-to-offline model.

Founded in 1997, Sun Smile develops its own brands, supports overseas brands entering Japan, and distributes beauty products through a network of partner retailers.

The acquisition will add nationwide offline retail to AnyMind’s existing digital services, offering a more integrated platform for brands.

AnyMind has made 13 acquisitions to date, including seven in Japan, employs over 2,000 people across 15 markets, and serves over 1,000 enterprises for ad and more than 190 enterprises for ecommerce.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Sun Smile’s distribution can drive online-to-offline (O2O) sales

  • AnyMind recently acquired NADESHIKO Beauty, a Japan-based beauty content platform for short-form video that sparks early-stage demand 1. It also agreed to buy Sun Smile, adding nationwide store reach that takes shoppers from social discovery to in-store purchase 1.
  • In Asia-Pacific (APAC), more beauty and personal care shoppers find products on social media, research on ecommerce, then buy in stores 1.
  • The company distributes its labels such as Pure Smile (sheet masks) and CHOOSY (lip care), plus overseas lines like JM solution (a Korean skincare brand) along with i’m meme (a Korean makeup brand) 2. Those ties let AnyMind test TikTok-to-store attribution.
  • With AnyMind’s 53% year-over-year (YoY) revenue up to ¥13 billion in Q3 2024 3, the planned Sun Smile integration will test if data-linked social-to-store attribution justifies O2O platform spend in Japan’s fragmented beauty retail.

Retail media and measurement vendors can pitch Sun Smile partners

  • Retailers that carry brands such as Pure Smile, CHOOSY, JM solution, and i’m meme 2 open chances for attribution plus retail media platforms (advertising on retailer-owned channels) to link social campaigns to in-store sales.
  • Adtech plus analytics vendors with in-store analytics, coupon redemption tracking, or QR-code attribution can integrate with Sun Smile’s distribution network for brands AnyMind supports on TikTok Shop and social commerce 1.
  • Cross-border payment, localization, plus logistics vendors can pitch overseas brands in Sun Smile’s portfolio like JM solution and Kaja (a Korean-American beauty brand) 2 seeking Japan expansion through AnyMind’s channel.
