Antler backs $1.6m seed of Australian healthtech startup OneMRI

OneMRI, an Australian healthtech startup offering whole-body MRI scans, has raised A$2.5 million (US$1.6 million) in seed funding to expand its services across the country.

Investors in the round include OIF Ventures, TEN13, Antler, Salus Ventures, AfterWork Ventures, Archangel Ventures, Black Sheep Capital, Prtnr, Larsen Ventures, Tribe Global Ventures, and several clinicians and radiologists.

Founded in October 2024 by Dr. Vu Tran, Andrew Barnes, and Gopi Sara, OneMRI partners with underutilized radiology clinics, healthcare professionals, and wellness brands.

It currently provides preventive imaging services in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Perth, Sydney, Newcastle, and Melbourne.

The scans are designed for early detection of over 500 potential conditions, with each appointment including pre- and post-scan consultations with clinicians and care coordinators.

OneMRI plans to add more locations in Australia and is preparing for international expansion in the Asia-Pacific region.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Underutilized medical infrastructure creates opportunity for preventive services

OneMRI’s business model demonstrates how healthcare startups can leverage existing spare capacity rather than building new infrastructure.

The company reports that over 100 MRI machines across Australia operate at just 30% capacity, allowing OneMRI to partner with underutilized clinics without straining healthcare resources1.

This approach is similar to strategies in other industries where companies have monetized excess capacity, such as Airbnb utilizing spare bedrooms and ride-sharing services leveraging personal vehicles during downtime.

By partnering with established radiology clinics like Scan Medical and Pinnacle Medical Imaging, OneMRI can offer services across six major Australian cities without the massive capital expenditure typically required for medical equipment1.

This asset-light model likely contributed to investor confidence, with the $2.5 million seed round being heavily oversubscribed and attracting 11 different investment firms1.

2️⃣ Premium preventive healthcare attracts significant investment despite medical skepticism

The preventive MRI market is experiencing rapid growth globally, even as medical professionals question the necessity of whole-body scans for healthy individuals.
