Anthropic’s Claude tops US App Store despite defense scrutiny

Anthropic saw a spike in adoption of its Claude app in the US over the weekend, even as its technology faces potential restrictions on adoption by government agencies and defense contractors.

The Claude iOS app topped the US free apps chart on Apple’s App Store, a day after the US administration moved to block federal agencies from using Anthropic’s technology.

Pete Hegseth said he had asked officials to classify Anthropic as a national security supply-chain risk, a move that would bar US defense contractors from using its tools.

Data from Sensor Tower show Claude climbed sharply in the US rankings in recent weeks, while OpenAI’s ChatGPT held the top spot for most of February.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The viral app spike masks a high-stakes standoff

  • The app’s sudden rise ties back to a fight over safety rules and Pentagon demands.
  • Anthropic refused to grant the Pentagon permission to use its models for “fully autonomous weapons or domestic mass surveillance of Americans” 1.
  • Anthropic has built a fast-growing enterprise business, which helped it hold firm in talks with the Pentagon.
  • The Pentagon contract at the center of the dispute is worth up to $200 million 2.
  • That financial cushion let Anthropic risk walking away from a government deal under its safety policies. The app store jump suggests public interest in that stance.

A government ban creates an opening for competitors and a test case for AI guardrails

  • The administration branded a major American company a “supply-chain risk,” a rare step up in pressure 3.
  • The decision quickly cleared space for rivals.
  • Hours after the ban, OpenAI said it had secured a Pentagon deal with similar safeguards. It bars domestic mass surveillance and keeps a human responsible for any use of force, including for autonomous weapon systems 2.
  • The episode pressures other AI labs to see if ethical guardrails can make it into military contracts. The Anthropic dispute remains unresolved 3.
  • Pentagon pressure could backfire by pushing other tech firms away from defense work 3.
