Anthropic unveils Claude Opus 4.7 AI model with safeguards

Anthropic has announced Claude Opus 4.7, an AI model with safeguards that block some high-risk cybersecurity requests.

The move comes as it prepares for a broader release of its more capable Mythos-class models.

The company said Opus 4.7 improves on Claude Opus 4.6, which was announced in February.

However, it remains less capable than Claude Mythos Preview, which Anthropic introduced earlier this month to identify software weaknesses and security flaws.

Anthropic said Mythos Preview is being rolled out to a limited set of companies through its Project Glasswing cybersecurity program.

Feedback from Opus 4.7’s safeguards will inform future releases.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Opus 4.7’s real upgrades are in agentic work and vision

  • Opus 4.7 improves agentic workflows plus vision, making it a steadier workhorse than its predecessor 1.
  • Autonomous coding rose on SWE-bench Pro, a widely used test of how well AI models handle real software engineering tasks, to 64.3% from 53.4% 2.
  • Image handling supports over triple the resolution, lifting visual-acuity accuracy from 54.5% to 98.5% on standard tests 1.
  • Cyber limits are deliberate. Anthropic ran training experiments to reduce selected cybersecurity skills. On CyberGym, a benchmark for cybersecurity task performance, Opus 4.7 scores 73.1%, below Mythos Preview’s 83.1% 3.
  • Security researchers doing vulnerability research, penetration testing, or red-teaming can apply to Anthropic’s Cyber Verification Program. It grants defensive access without default refusals 1.

A new phase for AI-driven risk and governance

  • Anthropic restricted Mythos after pre-release tests turned up thousands of high-severity vulnerabilities, including an OpenBSD flaw that went unnoticed for 27 years 4.
  • Enterprises may find bugs faster than they can fix them, raising the risk of a “vulnerability tsunami” 4.
  • Threat actors already use AI. One report counted an 89% year-over-year increase in AI-assisted attacks 5.
  • AI governance is moving into law in several regions 5.
  • The EU AI Act, a European Union law governing AI use, allows penalties up to 3% of global revenue for non-compliance and pushes firms to add security controls plus audit trails 5.
