Anthropic to grow London team to 800 in AI push

Anthropic will expand its London office to house 800 staff in the city’s Knowledge Quarter, up from more than 200 currently.

The move comes days after OpenAI announced plans to open its first permanent office in the UK capital.

The Claude developer said the new site gives it room to grow in London,

It is described as one of its most important research and commercial hubs outside the US.

The office will place Anthropic near other AI firms in the area, including OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta, Synthesia, and Wayve.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

London’s AI boom rests on policy and a deep talent pool

  • Anthropic is expanding in the UK, with government and city policies helping draw AI companies into London.
  • The UK offers financial incentives like competitive research and development tax credits, which have helped keep London a top destination for foreign tech investment for several years 1.
  • London also has a large talent base, with more engineers than any other city in Europe 1.
  • The City of London, the local government for London’s historic financial district, has a post-pandemic action plan to become a “global testbed” for data-driven technologies by linking tech businesses to its financial and corporate networks 2.

Anthropic’s growth comes from a focused enterprise strategy

  • Anthropic leans on an enterprise-first approach, putting business customers at the center compared with many AI rivals.
  • One analysis report puts about 85% of Anthropic revenue with business customers, and about 40% of enterprise large language model (LLM) spending versus OpenAI at 27% 3.
  • A separate analysis report estimates most Anthropic revenue comes from application programming interface (API) usage at 70–75% 4.
  • This push into enterprise also shapes access, including limiting the Claude Mythos Preview model to Project Glasswing, a cybersecurity initiative with participants such as Google and Microsoft, among others 5.
