Anthropic tests auto mode to run code with safeguards

Anthropic is testing an “auto mode” for Claude Code that can approve and run some coding actions without a developer’s permission, while blocking actions it flags as risky.

The company said the feature reviews each action with built-in safeguards, including checks for behavior the user did not request and signs of prompt injection, where hidden instructions in content can push an AI to take unintended steps.

Anthropic described auto mode as an added safety layer over Claude Code’s existing “dangerously-skip-permissions” option.

The feature will roll out to enterprise and API users and is recommended for non-production use.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Auto mode targets real-world risks

  • Third-party researchers built a multi-stage attack chain that could steal sensitive user conversation history from the default claude.ai service, using an invisible prompt injection through URL parameters 1.
  • Anthropic’s data puts prompt injection success as high as 78.6% in some environments when protections are missing 2.
  • Even with protections, attacks can still succeed up to 57.1%, since AI assistants cannot consistently separate a developer’s instructions from malicious text hidden in content like a code repository or documentation file 2 3.

Enterprise AI enters a phase where autonomy gets measured

  • Auto mode fits a broader shift from fixed AI workflows to autonomous agents that can handle unexpected edge cases 4.
  • By publishing prompt injection failure rates, Anthropic raises the bar for vendor openness and gives security teams numbers to compare across tools 2.
  • The feature can add to enterprise operational telemetry, alongside existing monitoring of lines of code accepted and token consumption (the amount of text an AI model processes) 5.
  • Security and governance teams could review an AI agent’s risk calls during audits, treating autonomy as something that can be tracked and managed inside infrastructure.
