Anthropic taps SpaceX data center for Claude growth
Anthropic will use more than 300 megawatts at the Colossus 1 data center in Memphis under a deal with SpaceX to meet rising demand for Claude.
SpaceX did not disclosed deal terms.
The agreement links competitors in AI and infrastructure as Anthropic also relies on Google for chips and cloud services.
Musk said the same day that xAI would stop operating as a separate company and be folded into SpaceX.

The Memphis data center Anthropic is renting has a disputed past
- Elon Musk’s xAI built Colossus 1 at unusual speed after work started in 2024, and the system went live in July 2024 after a reported 122-day build 1.
- That pace came partly from running several natural-gas turbines instead of waiting for a grid hookup, and xAI treated them as “portable” in Memphis so it could use them without permits, which drew scrutiny 1.
- The fast expansion and turbine use sparked backlash from nearby residents, who complained about pollution and raised air-quality worries that included chronic respiratory problems 1.
- The site’s hardware may cost about $7 billion, and the facility is expected to use more than 5 million gallons of water a day, which raised fears about pressure on local resources 2, 1.
The deal adds to the rush for power and computing capacity
- For Anthropic, the rental is a short-term answer to the wider scramble for computing power as the company also unveiled a $50 billion plan for computing infrastructure that includes new US data centers 3.
- The agreement also opens a revenue stream from leasing AI infrastructure, with SpaceX offering access to the Memphis-based Colossus 1 data center 4.
- The broader buildout is getting more expensive, with one study projecting that a leading AI data center could cost $200 billion by June 2030 and need about 9 gigawatts of power, or the output of nine nuclear reactors 2.
- That spending and energy demand could leave only a small group able to fund capacity at this scale, pushing other AI companies toward dependence on infrastructure owners and hyperscalers or large cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud 2.
