Karnataka IT minister Priyank Kharge met Anthropic India managing director Irina Ghose in Bengaluru on July 11 to discuss possible collaboration on AI skills, centers of excellence, incubators, and using AI and existing datasets to improve citizen services, according to the minister’s office.

The meeting comes as Anthropic prepares to open its first India office in Bengaluru after appointing Ghose to lead the market, which the company described as its second-largest globally for Claude.ai usage.

Ghose also said Anthropic was partnering with the Indian government on the IndiaAI Mission, relevant to the discussion on public-sector AI use.

For Karnataka, the talks come after the state approved the AI Centre of Excellence, CATS, in Bengaluru, a planned 200 million rupees (US$2.1 million) initiative focused on AI adoption, Industry 4.0, and support for startups, micro, small, and medium enterprises, research institutions, and academia.

Any state use of AI for citizen services would also sit within India’s AI governance framework, which called for human oversight, fairness, accountability, and risk mitigation.
