Anthropic sued by music publishers over Claude training

Sony Music Publishing, Warner Chappell, and other music publishers have sued Anthropic and co-founders Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.

The lawsuit alleged the San Francisco-based AI company used illegally obtained copyrighted works, including songs, lyrics, and sheet music, to train Claude.

The complaint, filed on August 28, said Anthropic acquired thousands of works through torrenting, scraping, and downloading, then used them without permission.

The filing adds to Anthropic’s copyright exposure. In a separate case, Universal Music Group, Concord, and ABKCO sought US$3 billion.

US music publishers are also challenging fair use in the company’s use of copyrighted works to build AI models.

Anthropic has also faced authors’ claims in Bartz. Court summaries showed a judge found fair use in training AI models on copyrighted books, but rejected Anthropic’s maintenance of a central library of pirated copies.
