Anthropic has struck a US$9.1 billion deal with Riot Platforms tied to Riot’s campus in Rockdale, Texas, according to people familiar with the matter.

Riot is a US Bitcoin miner that recently began selling AI data center capacity as it expands beyond cryptocurrency mining.

The company said earlier it had signed a contract through June 2048 to supply 191 megawatts to a “leading frontier AI” company. People familiar with the matter said the company is Anthropic.

Riot said two five-year extension options could raise the total value of the agreement to as much as US$16.1 billion.

The Riot deal adds to Anthropic’s recent push to secure large amounts of computing infrastructure, including a US$10 billion agreement with Volta Infra Holdings and a separate May deal to buy nearly US$45 billion of computing from xAI.
