Anthropic signs xAI compute deal worth over $40b
Anthropic has agreed to pay xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company, US$1.25 billion per month through May 2029 for compute capacity from the Colossus 1 data center near Memphis.
The agreement covers 300 megawatts of compute and was disclosed in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
The filing said Anthropic will get a discounted rate for the first two months while xAI completes its ramp-up.
Based on those terms, the contract could bring xAI more than US$40 billion in revenue.
The agreement lets either company end the deal with 90 days notice.
SpaceX said it expects to sign more compute service contracts.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Why Anthropic is renting from xAI
- Anthropic needed more room to run Claude. Heavy demand at the Colossus 1 data center near Memphis had slowed service for users during busy periods 1.
- The agreement adds computing power for Anthropic’s paid Claude Pro and Claude Max plans 1.
- xAI seems to have extra capacity, in part because use of Grok, its main AI assistant, has fallen in recent months 2.
- That gives xAI a way to earn from idle hardware by selling access as a cloud provider. This newer setup is often called a neocloud, a cloud computing provider built around large pools of AI chips 2.
What the deal means for neoclouds and computing in orbit
- The arrangement moves AI model makers closer to traditional cloud providers 2. Amazon Web Services is Amazon’s cloud computing division. Microsoft Azure is Microsoft’s cloud platform 2.
- Anthropic and xAI have also discussed building computing capacity in orbit 1. The idea comes from concern that the power, land, and cooling needed for future AI systems may outstrip what ground sites can supply on the needed timeline 3.
