Anthropic said on September 24 it will spend US$11.6 billion on cloud services over seven years under a deal with Akamai Technologies, a US cloud computing and cybersecurity company.

The agreement includes a warrant that could let Anthropic acquire up to a 5% stake in Akamai if certain spending thresholds are met.

The companies could expand the agreement by another US$9 billion.

Akamai said the contract is expected to require about US$5.5 billion in total capital expenditure.

It also plans to increase 2026 capital spending by about US$1.7 billion to secure and pre-purchase components for the deal, including memory. Akamai shares rose 16% in extended trading.

The agreement comes as Akamai has been targeting inference workloads through its cloud business, offering GPUs for AI infrastructure, and supporting distributed inference across 4,400 edge locations.
