Anthropic said to explore data residency in India
Anthropic is considering offering data residency for enterprise customers in India, according to people familiar with the matter.
The US-based AI model developer is exploring partnerships with Amazon Web Services to store client data locally in AWS’s Hyderabad and Mumbai regions.
Currently, Indian enterprises can access Anthropic’s Claude models through Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI, but data residency is not yet available.
The company recently announced plans to expand into India and open an office in Bengaluru by early 2026.
India is now the second-largest market for Claude users after the US.
The move comes as India introduces new data protection rules and as AWS — a major Anthropic investor — deploys its Inferentia and Trainium AI chips in the country.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
AWS Bedrock’s India availability doesn’t guarantee local data residency yet
- AWS made Bedrock generally available in Mumbai in May 2024 1. AWS docs say models vary by region, and cross-Region inference can send requests outside India 23. Anthropic’s data residency depends on AWS controls that keep data at rest only in Mumbai or Hyderabad, which Bedrock and its Knowledge Bases do not spell out 45. Those pages also say such inference may share data across Regions 45.
- Data residency often means storage stays in-country, while inference or serving can run elsewhere. Regulated buyers in India need guarantees that fit rules from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) or the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) 6. They also must meet duties set by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), which drives procurement risk 6.
Compliance-focused managed service providers can layer India residency controls atop global AI platforms
- Indian managed service providers (MSPs) and software-as-a-service (SaaS) vendors for regulated sectors can offer AI stacks that combine retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), guardrails, plus audit logs. They can lock data at rest to the Mumbai or Hyderabad Regions. Plan for cross-Region inference, since AWS says such use can share data across Regions, then run on AWS Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act when fully in force 246.
- Focus on the RBI’s data localization for payment processors, SEBI’s cloud rules for regulated entities, plus IRDAI’s mandates for insurers 6. Watch the Draft DPDP Rules for Significant Data Fiduciaries, defined as large processors with enhanced obligations, to sort buyers with blockers from those that prefer local storage for latency or optics 6.
