Anthropic launches smaller, cheaper AI model Claude Haiku 4.5

Anthropic has launched Claude Haiku 4.5, a new small AI model available to all users starting October 16.

Claude Haiku 4.5 offers coding performance similar to Claude Sonnet 4 but at one-third the cost and over twice the speed.

Internal benchmarks found Haiku 4.5 surpassed Sonnet 4 on certain tasks, such as using computers. It also showed lower rates of misaligned behaviors compared to Claude Sonnet 4.5, Claude Opus 4.1, and Claude Haiku 3.5.

Claude Haiku 4.5 is classified under the AI Safety Level 2 standard, considered to pose limited risks in the context of CBRN weapons.

Developers can access it via the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, and Google Cloud’s Vertex AI.

Pricing is US$1 per million input tokens and US$5 per million output tokens.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Haiku 4.5’s benchmark scores need independent validation to separate marketing from reality

  • Anthropic says Haiku 4.5 scores 73.3% on SWE-bench Verified 1. That result uses its own simple scaffold, an evaluation setup that automates tool calls and prompting, with prompt text like “You should use tools as much as possible, ideally more than 100 times” 1.
  • Public leaderboards use mixed methods. SWE-bench, a suite of code-repair benchmarks, runs multiple datasets (Verified, Lite, Multimodal) 2. Direct vendor comparisons suffer without standard tests.
  • AIME and other scores came from 10-run averages with a 128K thinking budget, a cap on internal reasoning tokens 1. Most production setups do not spend that much compute per query. That gap raises questions about real use versus tuned tests.

Cost-conscious enterprises can achieve immediate savings by migrating appropriate workloads to Haiku 4.5

  • Pricing sits at $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens 1. Haiku 4.5 runs at about one-third the price of Sonnet 4 with similar coding results 1. That mix suits high-volume work such as Continuous Integration (CI) checks and code reviews 3.
  • Teams running parallelized agent workflows, software agents that coordinate tools and other models, can deploy more Haiku 4.5 instances within budget 3. Earlier costs kept these setups rare.
  • Model-routing platforms, systems that pick the most cost-effective model per request, can steer simpler coding tasks to Haiku 4.5 and save frontier models for harder work. Third-party pricing comparison tools already help developers estimate costs across 15+ providers 45.
