Anthropic launches Claude Opus 5 AI model

Anthropic launched Opus 5 on July 24, saying the new Claude AI model is designed for office work and computer programming, and offers capabilities close to its more powerful Fable 5 at about half the price.

Product leader Dianne Penn said Opus 5 was more efficient than May’s Opus 4.8, reflecting the San Francisco-based AI startup’s rapid pace of development.

Anthropic said testing showed Opus 5 was less capable of exploiting cyber vulnerabilities than Fable 5, and less susceptible to being tricked into misuse than Anthropic’s other current models, allowing the company to apply less restrictive safeguards.

Fable 5, released in June, was temporarily unavailable after the US authorities raised concerns that the model’s capabilities could be diverted to foreign military intelligence.

Dianne Penn said users should choose Fable 5 for “days-long, very autonomous projects.”
