Anthropic to commit 5% of shares to public benefit fund

Anthropic said it will commit 5% of its shares to a wholly owned public benefit fund. Possible uses include nonprofit donations, direct distributions to specific populations, and responses to AI-related job disruption.

At the US$965 billion valuation, that stake would notionally be worth about US$48 billion, though it is not cash available for spending.

Anthropic said it may contribute another 2% of shares for every 50% increase in the company’s value.

The company already has a Long-Term Benefit Trust, but said it will share details of the new fund’s structure and governance in the coming months.

The company has also committed US$200 million to study AI’s labor-market effects. Goldman Sachs has examined AI’s potential effects on the global workforce, while other tech companies have pledged equity for social impact.
