Anthropic to challenge US supply chain risk designation in court
Anthropic said in a company blog post that it had been designated a supply chain risk by the US government and “sees no choice but to challenge” the designation in court.
CEO Dario Amodei also confirmed this in an interview.
The designation requires defense vendors and contractors to certify they do not use Anthropic’s models for Pentagon work and has typically been reserved for organizations operating in foreign adversary countries, such as Huawei.
Anthropic said it sought assurances against use for fully autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance and resisted a Department of Defense (DoD) request for unfettered access to Claude.
The company signed a US$200 million contract with the DoD in July 2025. It was also the first AI lab to integrate its models into mission workflows on classified networks, while rivals OpenAI and xAI later agreed to deploy their models in classified capacities.
Anthropic said the designation does not limit uses of Claude or business outside DoD contracts.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The government’s case uses a law often tied to supply-chain threats linked to foreign adversaries
- The designation appears to rely on 10 U.S.C. § 3252, a Defense Department procurement tool that bars vendors from some national security system buys. It usually comes up in supply-chain risk tied to foreign adversaries, with commentary citing examples such as Huawei 1.
- Legal experts say using this designation against a US company in public looks without precedent. Public statements tie the clash to contract terms, including Anthropic pushing back on a Department of Defense (DoD) request for unfettered access to Claude, rather than a standard supply-chain security threat assessment 2.
- After the designation, OpenAI struck a Pentagon deal to run models in classified environments. It also laid out safety principles that prohibit domestic mass surveillance. Humans must stay responsible for the use of force, including for autonomous weapon systems, which invites comparisons to Anthropic’s requested restrictions 3.
A contract dispute turns into a warning for other defense contractors and tech suppliers
- The move warns that negotiating contract terms with the Pentagon can bring business loss and reputational harm, which may steer other tech companies away from defense contracts 3.
- The dispute could still help Anthropic’s commercial business by reinforcing its brand around safety guardrails. Those include assurances against fully autonomous weapons and against mass domestic surveillance, which may appeal to some enterprise customers 4.
- The designation muddies planning for companies that both supply the US military and work with Anthropic. Reporting names Amazon and Google, yet the specific implications for any one company remain unclear 3.
