Anthropic buys JavaScript engine firm to strengthen Claude Code

Anthropic announced it is acquiring Bun, a JavaScript runtime founded in 2021 by Jarred Sumner, to strengthen its AI coding platform Claude Code.

Claude Code, launched in May 2025, reportedly reached a US$1 billion annualized revenue run rate six months after its public release.

Bun will remain open source and MIT-licensed after the acquisition.

Anthropic said that integrating Bun will enhance Claude Code’s performance and stability.

Bun has seen adoption by developers and companies such as Midjourney, and receives over 7 million downloads monthly.

The company said the acquisition is part of its strategy to expand technical capabilities for AI-driven software development.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Claude Code’s $1B run rate needs outside checks for Bun

  • Anthropic claims Claude Code hit a $1 billion annualized run rate six months after launch without independent verification. GitHub Copilot (an AI code-completion tool from GitHub) posts 55% productivity gains 1. MetaCTO (an industry group on software engineering tooling plus adoption) puts development-phase AI use at 84% with Copilot among popular tools, not the whole 84% 2.
  • Missing data on enterprise use, user retention, and pricing versus Copilot’s $10 per‑month plan 1 muddies the market picture. Bun brings 4× HTTP throughput over Node.js (a widely used JavaScript runtime for server-side applications) 3, yet success hinges on its terminal-first agentic approach (an autonomous assistant that works from the command line to execute multi-step changes) for multi-file changes winning teams over IDE-centric, GitHub-integrated Copilot workflows 41.

Third parties can profit from Bun’s gaps

  • For vendors and consultancies, 7 million monthly Bun downloads open work in migrations, CI/CD hookups, and enterprise support 5. Node.js compatibility stays high, though native addons (compiled modules) and edge libraries (code designed for content-delivery-network edge runtimes) often need fixes 5.
  • Tool makers can bridge speed versus readiness as CPU-heavy runs drop to 1.7s vs 3.4s 3, so offer monitoring plus compatibility tests and dual-runtime setups (running Bun alongside Node.js in parallel) that teams already use 5. If Anthropic speeds enterprise uptake beyond current users like Midjourney, legacy-modernization firms can guide Node.js moves with shadow deployments (operating the new stack in parallel without serving user traffic) and stepwise rollouts 3.
