Anthropic acquires US AI software startup Vercept

Anthropic has acquired Vercept to enhance Claude’s ability to interact with live apps and perform complex tasks.

The company aims to improve Claude’s capabilities in understanding and acting within software used daily by humans.

Anthropic says Vercept’s team, including co-founders Kiana Ehsani, Luca Weihs, and Ross Girshick, specializes in perception and interaction problems relevant to AI functioning inside existing software.

This acquisition follows the recent release of Claude Sonnet 4.6, which Anthropic says scored 72.5% on OSWorld, a widely used evaluation for AI computer use, in tasks like navigating spreadsheets and web forms.

Anthropic said Vercept will wind down its external product in the coming weeks and join Anthropic to advance AI’s computer use abilities.

Anthropic has also previously acquired teams such as Bun and said it is hiring engineers for its expanding team.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The acquisition aims to build AI that reads screens and works inside live apps

  • Vercept set out to create AI that runs on a user’s computer, “understanding your screen, your workflows, and your intent” 1.
  • This work supports “computer use agents” that operate software through screenshots, mouse clicks, and keyboard inputs, similar to a person 2.
  • Anthropic has pushed past the browser. Its reference to the OSWorld benchmark matters since the test checks whether an agent can run a full operating system, including file system states and application configurations 2.
  • The deal adds a team co-founded by Kiana Ehsani, Luca Weihs, and Ross Girshick. They focus on AI that can “see what you see” and take actions in the same programs people use, which helps when software environments get complicated 3.

AI is moving toward autonomous digital employees

  • The purchase fits an industry sprint to build “agentic coworkers” that can handle complex business work without constant oversight 4.
  • The plan goes past basic chat tools. Anthropic wants systems that run full workflows, like building marketing campaigns or handling financial reconciliation, using a company’s existing software 4.
  • Many firms still depend on older tools with limited or no application programming interfaces (APIs), which has blocked automation for years 4.
  • With a team that specializes in computer-use AI, Anthropic can target work inside these systems so automation fits a company’s established processes 4.
