Ant International, Google launch AI commerce protocol
Ant International is collaborating with Google to support the launch of the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard designed to facilitate agentic commerce across the shopping journey.
The UCP is intended to allow different AI agents and systems to interact seamlessly across various platforms and payment providers.
Google said that with UCP, users will soon be able to complete purchases directly within AI-powered interfaces such as the Gemini app and Google Search.
Ant International said it is focusing on providing agent-native payment solutions and strengthening security measures, including fraud detection for AI-driven transactions.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) adoption depends on governance clarity and rollout timeline
- More than 20 retailers and payment providers back UCP 1. Impact hangs on governance that yields one standard or a patchwork of proprietary versions.
- Google’s reference implementation powers direct buying in AI Mode in Search and Gemini 1. Most merchants cannot transact yet since they need active Google Merchant Center accounts (where sellers manage product feeds and eligibility) and eligible products 1.
- UCP is open source and uses reverse-domain names (for example, com.example.merchant) 2. That design removes approval committees, leaves no central registry to enforce consistency, so gaps can appear across implementations.
Payment service providers can build agentic commerce middleware
- Payment service providers (PSPs) with fraud prevention vendors can build UCP integration layers that expose capabilities plus extensions, for example product discovery or discounts. The protocol uses standardized JSON manifests (machine-readable files) at /.well-known/ucp for capability discovery 1.
- UCP separates payment instruments, for example cards or bank accounts, from payment handlers, for example wallets or processors 1. That opens room for wallet companies or processing platforms to build negotiation engines (software that chooses among available options) that pick methods by cart contents, buyer location, or transaction amount 2.
- Third-party developers can use UCP support for multiple transports, including REST or A2A (app-to-app handoffs between applications) 1. MCP (Model Context Protocol, a way for AI models to connect to external tools) 1 also works for middleware that adds fraud controls or analytics without forcing merchants to rebuild existing commerce infrastructure.
