Ant Group leads hundreds of millions of yuan funding for Xeonova

Ant Group has led a pre-A funding round for Xeonova, a Hefei-based nuclear fusion startup, as investment in China’s fusion energy sector accelerates.

Xeonova said the round raised hundreds of millions of yuan and included Hidden Hill Capital and Zijin Mining Group as additional backers.

Ant Group is an affiliate of Alibaba.

The funding comes as energy needs surge due to increased demand from AI and efforts to decarbonize.

Fusion technology, which combines light atoms to release energy, is seen as a potential source of safe and abundant power, though no commercial solution has been achieved.

According to venture capital tracker ITjuzi, 12 Chinese fusion startups raised a total of 14.7 billion yuan (US$2 billion) by the end of July.

China Fusion Energy, a unit of China National Nuclear Corporation, was established in July with 11.5 billion yuan of registered capital from seven state-owned firms.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Ant Group backs private fusion in China’s state-guided model

  • China’s fusion sector mixes state projects with private bets. State firms build large programs and sites, while tech groups like Ant back startups. Fusion Energy Tech. is a state-backed venture in Hefei building BEST, a planned fusion research device. It has registered capital of 14.5 billion yuan 1.
  • Ant Group invested as Shanghai pushes to become a world-class fusion R&D hub with double-digit annual growth through 2025, which aligns with regional policy 1.
  • Xeonova uses AI-powered digital twins 2 (virtual replicas of physical systems used to simulate and optimize performance) to speed fusion development. It targets China’s rising AI data center power needs that traditional supply may not meet 2.

Vendors can target China’s new fusion startups

  • Suppliers of cryogenics and superconducting magnets have a window, helped by China’s edge in thin-film superconductors 2. Vacuum systems, pulsed power equipment (systems that deliver short bursts of very high electrical power), and simulation software fit the moment too. ITjuzi, a venture-capital data tracker, counts 12 Chinese fusion startups that raised 14.7 billion yuan by end-July [News Article].
  • Hefei and Shanghai host Xeonova, Fusion Energy Tech., plus Energy Singularity. Energy Singularity aims to complete a next-gen tokamak (a doughnut-shaped magnetic confinement fusion device) by 2027 1. Both cities have buyers and supply hubs.
  • Diagnostic gear makers and High-Performance Computing (HPC) providers can stand out by backing AI-optimized plasma control systems 2. These software and sensor loops stabilize super-heated plasma and move beyond empirical control.
