Ant Group digital bank adds stock trading to AlipayHK

Ant Bank, Ant Group’s digital bank in Hong Kong, has added stock trading to its AlipayHK app.

The feature allows users to buy Hong Kong and US shares and ETFs as the company expands into the city’s retail brokerage market.

The service also covers warrants and callable contracts through the app’s wealth section, with zero commission for Hong Kong stocks and no custody fees.

The launch follows Ant’s March purchase of a 50.55% stake in Hong Kong-listed Bright Smart Securities for HK$2.81 billion (US$358 million).

The deal was completed through its wealth management affiliate, Wealthiness and Prosperity Holding.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Ant’s zero-fee trading enters Hong Kong’s fee war

  • Ant’s zero-commission trading looks less like a shake-up and more like the cost of joining Hong Kong’s brokerage market 1.
  • Futu, a Hong Kong-based online brokerage platform, has waived commission on Hong Kong stocks for years. Some rivals started cutting fees in 2020 2, 3.
  • The fight has squeezed older brokerages. Nearly 200 stockbrokers have shut since 2020, while the top 14 firms took 70.9% of trading turnover 4.
  • The trading tool sits inside a broader super app plan. Ant wants it to work with existing services and keep AlipayHK’s more than 4.2 million users engaged 5, 6.

Payment apps are turning into wealth-management channels

  • Ant’s move offers a clear example of how payment apps with large user bases can branch into wealth management through in-app distribution 1.
  • One route is buying control of a licensed local brokerage such as Bright Smart Securities. Ant’s wealth-management affiliate bought a 50.55% stake in the Hong Kong-listed broker for HK$2.81 billion (US$358 million) 1.
  • The shift can turn investing into a built-in app feature used alongside everyday payments. That puts pressure on standalone fintech firms and traditional banks that no longer own the main customer relationship.
