Ant Group deepens healthcare push with new AI app AQ

Ant Group, operator of the Alipay digital platform, is expanding its involvement in China’s healthcare sector, an area that appears to be emerging as a new focus alongside its existing payment and financial services. This broader initiative includes the recent launch of its new AI healthcare app, AQ.

The AQ app provides over 100 AI-powered services, which include doctor recommendations, medical report analysis, and personalized medical advice. It also facilitates connections between users and digital services offered by over 5,000 hospitals and nearly 1 million doctors across China.

This development by Ant Group aligns with projections of increasing demand for healthcare services, influenced by China’s demographic trends toward an aging population and continued urbanization.

Estimates from China’s National Health Commission indicate that approximately 400 million people, or more than 30% of the population, will be aged 60 or older by around 2035, suggesting a rise in healthcare needs.

AQ operates on Ant Group’s Healthcare Large Model, developed from over a decade of the company’s experience in the healthcare sector, which began with its initial online hospital appointment-making service on Alipay in 2014. This model, equipped with capabilities in medical reasoning and multimodal interaction, has consistently performed well in HealthBench and MedBench evaluations. It also integrates Ant Group’s privacy and security technologies.

AQ operates on Ant Group’s Healthcare Large Model, developed from over a decade of the company’s experience in the healthcare sector, which began with its initial online hospital appointment-making service on Alipay in 2014. Beyond the AQ app, Ant Group’s wider healthcare strategy encompasses direct integration of its AI capabilities with medical institutions, such as embedding its healthcare large model into All-in-One Large Model Machines for Healthcare for hospitals. The company also supports developing AI Assistant for Hospital Services and AI Medical Insurance Assistants.

Ant Group is also extending AI capabilities to support medical professionals. Following its acquisition of Haodf, an online doctor consultation platform, Ant Group introduced the AI Doctor Assistant to aid with diagnosis, medical record management, and patient education. The company is collaborating with doctors to develop AI Doctor Agents, aiming to provide patients with credible healthcare advice. These efforts aim to contribute to the efficient use of medical resources and promote broader medical inclusion in China.
