AMD Ventures invests in Japan self-driving startup Turing

Japanese self-driving software startup Turing has added AMD Ventures as an investor and started using AMD graphics processing units (GPUs) for about 10% of its AI training as it works toward a commercial launch as early as 2028.

Turing said it had previously relied on Nvidia hardware for training and inference.

Its executives see AMD’s chips as a way to diversify supply and lower costs in the capital-intensive autonomous driving market.

The company also said it raised US$79 million in an equity and debt extension to its series A round.

People familiar with the matter said the financing valued Turing at about US$600 million.

Turing is developing amid rising competition in Japan. A partnership between Nissan Motor, UK-based AI startup Wayve Technologies, and Uber Technologies plans to launch a pilot self-driving taxi service in Tokyo by the end of 2026.
