AMD seeks AI chip deals with Samsung, Naver
Lisa Su, AMD CEO, visited Naver on March 18 to discuss supplying AI chips for its data centers and was scheduled to hold talks with Samsung Electronics on foundry cooperation.
She was scheduled to meet Samsung Electronics’ DS division to discuss expanding collaboration beyond memory to foundry services.
Local reports said Su was also scheduled to meet Lee Jae-yong, Samsung chairman, to discuss ways to formalize business cooperation.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The visit targets sovereign AI and a deeper Samsung partnership
- Naver is looking at AMD as it pushes its AI platform, HyperCLOVA X, into markets with strict data sovereignty requirements such as Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Thailand 1.
- That plan needs AI infrastructure that cuts reliance on Nvidia, with AMD positioned as a viable option at scale 1.
- Foundry discussions may be part of the agenda, yet AMD’s nearer-term ask from Samsung centers on a steady supply of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a vital part for AI accelerators 2.
- The timing also suits Samsung, which is pitching its 2nm foundry process plus packaging services to AI companies 3. Samsung Foundry is reportedly close to an 8nm deal with Intel, and it has also been reported to make an 8nm NVIDIA Tegra chip (a processor family used in game consoles and embedded devices) for Nintendo’s Switch 2 4.
A challenger’s strategy in an Nvidia-led market
- The trip landed during Nvidia’s GTC conference, and it has been read as a way to put AMD’s Korea ties in view, including chip supply talks with Naver and manufacturing talks with Samsung 2.
- The gap remains large. Nvidia has said it is working with South Korea to grow AI infrastructure using more than a quarter-million NVIDIA GPUs across sovereign clouds and AI factories, including deployments by NAVER Cloud 5.
- Across the industry, more buyers are splitting orders across suppliers. Meta and OpenAI are also buying AMD chips, which gives AMD a path to gain share 1.
- If AMD and Naver reach a workable model, other national AI champions could copy it to build sovereign infrastructure without getting stuck in one vendor’s ecosystem 1.
