AMD, Meta partner on 6 GW AI GPU deal
AMD and Meta announced a multi-year partnership to deploy up to 6 gigawatts of AMD Instinct GPUs for Meta’s AI infrastructure, with shipments starting in the second half of 2026.
The first deployment will use a custom AMD Instinct GPU based on the MI450 architecture, optimized for Meta’s workloads, supported by AMD’s Helios rack-scale architecture developed with Meta.
The collaboration also includes AMD EPYC processors, with Meta expected to be a lead customer for the upcoming 6th-generation EPYC CPUs codenamed “Venice” and “Verano.”
AMD has issued Meta a performance-based warrant for up to 160 million shares, vesting as milestones are met.
The agreement aims to align AMD’s silicon, systems, and software roadmaps to support large-scale AI deployments.
AMD and Meta have previously collaborated on deploying AMD CPUs and GPUs across Meta’s global infrastructure.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Meta’s AMD deal involves more than just chips
- The Wall Street Journal put the partnership at more than $100 billion, while neither company shared financial terms 1.
- AMD granted Meta a performance-based warrant for up to 160 million shares that vests as milestones are hit. The warrant lets Meta buy up to 160 million AMD shares for $0.01 each if AMD meets specific GPU shipment targets 2.
- AMD has used a similar playbook before. It structured a nearly identical 6 gigawatt agreement with OpenAI that also included an option for a potential 10% stake 3.
- The arrangement is not exclusive. Meta is also pursuing a multi-year, multi-generation partnership with NVIDIA to build its AI infrastructure, which points to a multi-vendor approach 4.
Hyperscalers are increasingly aligning incentives with their chip suppliers
- The deal fits a wider push by hyperscalers (the biggest cloud and internet platforms) to build up a second supplier and ease heavy reliance on NVIDIA for AI accelerators 5.
- Performance-based equity warrants tie AMD and customers like Meta, plus earlier OpenAI, to shared milestones tied to GPU shipments plus product roadmap delivery 2.
- This co-investment model gives AMD large partners it can plan around, while adding new market risks.
- The warrant structure can dilute existing AMD shareholders. Ownership could fall by as much as 20% if Meta and OpenAI fully exercise their options 6.
