AMD to invest up to $5b in Anthropic partnership
Chipmaker AMD said on July 22 it will invest up to US$5 billion in Anthropic under a partnership that includes deploying up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 Series graphics processing units in AMD Helios rack-scale systems.
The first gigawatt is due in the first half of 2027.
AMD did not disclose whether the commitment would be equity, financing, or another structure.
AMD said Anthropic will deploy the chips in AMD Helios systems.
Helios is AMD’s rack-scale AI platform for large data centers, with volume deployments expected in the second half of 2026. AMD said each rack integrates 72 GPUs.
The agreement follows Anthropic’s April disclosure that demand for its Claude AI assistant had strained the startup’s infrastructure.
It also adds to Anthropic’s separate compute deals with Amazon, Google, Broadcom, and SpaceX.
Anthropic has said Amazon Web Services remains its primary training and cloud provider.
The company is securing up to 5GW of new capacity while also expanding its use of Google tensor processing units and other chips.
