AMD explores Samsung memory, foundry partnerships
AMD CEO Lisa Su said in Seoul on Oct. 7 that the US chipmaker was still exploring memory and foundry partnerships with Samsung Electronics, a South Korean electronics company and memory chipmaker. Memory supply stayed tight as data center demand remained strong.
Su said she had met executives at SK Hynix, a South Korean memory chipmaker, and planned to meet Samsung executives.
She added that AMD was working with customers to use memory more efficiently and was urging suppliers to expand output faster.
AMD and Samsung signed a memorandum of understanding in March to expand cooperation on memory chips for AI infrastructure. They also agreed to discuss a possible foundry partnership, under which Samsung could manufacture next-generation AMD chips under contract.
In August 2024, Samsung’s 8-layer HBM3E chips had cleared tests for Nvidia use, according to sources. That milestone does not establish Samsung’s current role in AMD’s memory supply chain.
