AMD CEO says AI reshapes hiring, not jobs

AMD CEO Lisa Su said the company’s hiring pace has not slowed due to AI, but it is now prioritizing candidates with AI expertise.

Speaking at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, Su explained that AMD is focusing on hiring people who are “AI forward” as the company expands.

AMD, which develops GPU chips for AI applications, competes with Nvidia, the dominant player in the AI chip market.

AI’s rapid adoption has prompted concerns about its impact on jobs, but Su said the technology is augmenting productivity rather than replacing workers.

She added that AMD is integrating AI into its chip design, manufacturing, and testing processes.

As of December 2024, AMD employed around 28,000 people worldwide.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

AMD shifts to AI-focused hiring; headcount ~28,000 by Dec 2024

  •  CEO Lisa Su is prioritizing AI expertise. The company employed about 28,000 people worldwide as of December 2024, and hiring has not slowed due to AI.
  •  Revenue hit $9.2 billion in Q3 2025. That was up 36% year over year. Demand for Instinct AI accelerators (AMD’s data center GPUs for AI), EPYC server processors, and Ryzen PC processors drove the gain 1.
  •  Hiring is likely shifting toward AI skills rather than staff cuts. AMD is weaving AI into chip design, manufacturing, and testing while it chases Nvidia in AI chips.
  •  Free cash flow hit a record, and the 54% non-GAAP gross margin gives AMD room to keep hiring while it targets specialized AI talent 1.

Training vendors can target ROCm and GPU programming skills as AMD scales AI ambitions

  •  Open roles include ROCm (Radeon Open Compute) and GPU software positions such as principal software developer for GPU/ROCm 2.
  •  AMD’s Artificial Intelligence Group works in the open source community and builds unified AI software. That opens doors for training providers focused on ROCm and heterogeneous computing (using CPUs with GPUs together) 3.
  •  Tech staffing firms and coding bootcamps that target semiconductor AI roles can stand out with ROCm-specific curricula. AMD’s network of partners is expanding with OpenAI and Oracle 1.
  •  Investors can look at education-technology (edtech) companies that close GPU programming skill gaps. Favor those with placement pipelines into AMD and its partners.
