AMD said on September 28 it agreed to acquire World Labs, a San Francisco-based AI lab developing world models that can simulate 3D environments, for about US$8.2 billion in an all-stock deal.

World Labs founder Fei-Fei Li, a Stanford professor who previously led AI research at Google, will join AMD as chief scientist and executive vice president.

AMD said it expects the deal to close later this year.

The transaction is AMD’s second-largest acquisition on record after its purchase of Xilinx in 2022. It is also AMD’s biggest AI deal yet, as tech companies spend heavily to secure research talent.

It also adds to AMD’s AI efforts, after the company completed its acquisition of Silo AI in August 2024 to expand its AI capabilities.
