Amazon wins FCC approval to add 4,500 internet satellites

Amazon received FCC approval to deploy 4,500 additional Leo internet satellites, bringing its planned constellation to around 7,700 satellites.

The company has launched over 150 satellites since April and aims to start providing satellite internet later this year through its Leo service.

The new satellites will operate at altitudes of up to 400 miles and support more frequency bands and geographic coverage.

Amazon is required to launch half of the approved satellites by February 2032, and the rest by February 2035.

The company has requested an extension to meet a previous FCC deadline to deploy 1,600 first-generation satellites by July 2026, citing delays in rocket availability.

Amazon has invested US$10 billion in its satellite internet project and plans to spend an additional US$1 billion this year.

Its next satellite launch is scheduled for February 11 via an Arianespace rocket, with 17 more missions booked.
