Amazon to invest over $4b to expand delivery in rural US
Amazon has expanded its Same-Day and Next-Day delivery services to over 4,000 small cities and towns in rural parts of the US.
This initiative aims to improve delivery options in areas such as Asbury, Iowa; Fort Seneca, Ohio; Lewes, Delaware; North Padre Island, Texas; and Sharptown, Maryland.
The company plans to invest more than US$4 billion to expand its delivery network by 2026.
This expansion addresses the growing demand for faster delivery services in rural areas, which often have limited online shopping options.
Amazon reported that the volume of items delivered through Same-Day and Next-Day services in the US has increased by over 30% compared to the previous year.
The initiative is expected to create new jobs, including positions at delivery stations and driving roles within rural communities.
This announcement precedes Amazon’s Prime Day event, which is scheduled for July 8 to July 11.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Amazon’s long journey from outsourcing to logistics dominance
Amazon’s rural expansion represents the latest chapter in a 15-year logistics transformation that has reshaped e-commerce expectations.
The company first introduced same-day delivery in 2009 as a limited service in select urban markets, beginning its shift away from dependence on third-party carriers 1.
A pivotal moment came in 2013 when holiday delivery failures by UPS and FedEx pushed Amazon to accelerate building its own logistics network, a decision that would fundamentally change its business model 2.
By 2019, Amazon had already surpassed both UPS and FedEx in package volume, delivering 3.5 billion packages annually through its rapidly expanding infrastructure 2.
This rural push builds on Amazon’s massive existing footprint of over 175 fulfillment centers globally, with warehouses strategically positioned within 20 miles of half the U.S. population 3.
The $4 billion rural investment follows Amazon’s consistent pattern of logistics innovation, establishing service in profitable urban markets first and then gradually expanding outward as infrastructure and efficiency improve.
