Amazon to invest $50b in AI, supercomputing for US government

Amazon has announced an investment of up to US$50 billion to expand AI and supercomputing infrastructure for US government customers, with construction expected to begin in 2026.

The initiative will add nearly 1.3 gigawatts of computing capacity across AWS Top Secret, AWS Secret, and AWS GovCloud (US) regions.

This expansion will give federal agencies more data center resources and access to a broad suite of AWS AI services and hardware, including Amazon SageMaker, Amazon Bedrock, AWS Trainium, Amazon Nova, Anthropic Claude, open-weights foundation models, and NVIDIA AI infrastructure.

Amazon said the new infrastructure will support missions in national security, scientific research, autonomous systems development, cybersecurity, energy innovation, and healthcare.

AWS, Amazon’s cloud division, currently serves more than 11,000 US government agencies and has a history of developing secure, classified cloud environments for federal use.

The company said the investment supports priorities in the Administration’s AI Action Plan and federal efforts to boost AI and high-performance computing in the US.
