Amazon to invest $300m in India expansion

Amazon said it plans to invest more than 28 billion rupees (about US$300 million) in India to expand its operations network.

The funds will also support safety, health, and financial programs for workers across fulfilment, sortation, and delivery site.

The spending follows a 20 billion rupees (US$213 million) commitment in 2025 that added 17 fulfilment centers, six sortation centers, and 75 last-mile delivery stations.

It comes as Amazon scales its quick commerce service Amazon Now to more than 300 micro-fulfilment centers in Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, and Mumbai.

The new funding will expand air-conditioned rest stops, insurance, scholarships, health camps, and access to government benefits for workers and community members.

It will also add AI tools to flag unsafe driving, suggest rest breaks, and help balance delivery routes.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Amazon’s worker wellness spending lands during a human rights probe

  • Amazon’s spending on worker safety came after heavy government and legal scrutiny of its India operations 1.
  • In 2024, the Haryana state government took the company to court over alleged labor law breaches at its Manesar warehouse, including a lack of safety gear 2.
  • The case came after reports that workers were asked to promise they would not take water or toilet breaks. India’s National Human Rights Commission, the country’s statutory human rights watchdog, called it a “serious issue of human rights” 3.
  • Amazon later told India’s central labor commissioner, the senior federal labor official, that it had “breached workplace safety standards” at the site. It said the incident was a motivational exercise led by one employee 4.

Quick commerce is tripling Prime shopping activity and opening a new retail fight

  • Amazon Now, its 10-minute delivery service, is driven by a shift in shopping habits. Prime members shop three times more often after they start using it 5.
  • To meet that demand, Amazon is expanding fast. It is opening about two micro-fulfilment centers a day 6.
  • That network also helps outside sellers. It powers services such as Multi-Channel Fulfillment, which lets direct-to-consumer brands ship orders from their own sites or other sales platforms through Amazon’s infrastructure 7.
  • This gives Amazon an edge in retail logistics. Rivals must spend heavily to keep up or depend on its delivery network.
