Amazon set to raise $5.4b in first sterling bond sale
Amazon is set to raise 4 billion pounds (US$5.42 billion) from its first sterling bond sale after orders topped 12 billion pounds (US$16.3 billion), a bank managing the deal said.
The sale comes as large cloud computing companies seek more funding sources for AI spending.
The sterling offering adds to Amazon’s borrowing in euro, Swiss franc, and Canadian-dollar markets, after it raised C$14 billion (US$10.2 billion) in a record Canadian-dollar deal tied to AI infrastructure.
Amazon has outlined about US$200 billion in long-term AI infrastructure spending, including data centers for Amazon Web Services and generative AI workloads.
The spending helps explain the company’s repeated trips to debt markets.
London Stock Exchange Group data shows large cloud companies have issued more than US$200 billion of debt this year.
The European Central Bank warned that large, repeated bond deals can influence pricing and financing conditions for other euro-area borrowers.
