Amazon said to develop AR glasses for consumers, delivery staff

Amazon is developing two separate Augmented Reality (AR) glasses projects, according to a report by The Information.

Sources said one version, internally called Jayhawk, targets consumers and may launch in late 2026 or early 2027.

The consumer AR glasses are expected to feature a microphone, speakers, a camera, and a single-eye, full-color display, with technology supplied by Chinese firm Meta-Bounds.

A second model, codenamed Amelia, is reportedly being designed for Amazon delivery drivers with a focus on productivity and could be ready by Q2 2026.

These products would place Amazon in competition with Meta, which already offers smart glasses through a partnership with Ray-Ban, and is expected to unveil a new one-eye AR device called Hypernova at its upcoming Connect event.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Amazon leverages delivery network as AR testing ground before consumer launch

  • Amazon’s timeline reveals a strategic approach: AR glasses for delivery drivers launch in Q2 2026, while the consumer version follows in late 2026 or early 2027 2.
  • This sequence allows Amazon to test and refine AR technology with its workforce of over 100,000 delivery drivers before entering the competitive consumer market.
  • The delivery-focused glasses will provide turn-by-turn navigation and delivery instructions on a small embedded screen, addressing practical workplace needs first 2.
  • Companies like DHL have already demonstrated AR’s logistics value, reporting increases in picking productivity when workers use AR-assisted systems 3.
  • Amazon’s approach mirrors successful enterprise-to-consumer technology adoption patterns, where workplace testing helps identify technical issues and user experience improvements before mass market release.

Late market entry challenges Amazon despite infrastructure advantages

  • Amazon enters AR glasses development years behind competitors, having previously struggled with AR initiatives like discontinuing its Sumerian AR/VR platform in May 2022 4.
  • The company’s Echo Frames from 2019 offered only audio engagement without true AR displays, while Meta already sells Ray-Ban smart glasses and is launching its Hypernova AR glasses next week 14.
  • Despite holding a 33% market share in cloud infrastructure that could support AR applications requiring heavy computational power, Amazon has made limited investments in AR/VR compared to competitors 4.
  • The consumer AR glasses market that Amazon plans to enter by early 2027 will face established competition from Meta, Apple’s rumored “Apple Glass,” and other tech giants already developing AR products.
