Amazon has reportedly made a last-minute bid to acquire TikTok before the Apr. 5 deadline for ByteDance to divest or face a US ban.

The bid was submitted in a letter to Vice President JD Vance and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, though some involved in negotiations doubt its seriousness.

TikTok, ByteDance, and Amazon have not commented, but Amazon’s shares rose 1.3% following the news.

The divestment deadline stems from a 2024 law citing national security concerns over ByteDance’s ownership.

President Donald Trump, after taking office for a second term in January, signed an executive order delaying enforcement by 75 days. Multiple parties have expressed interest in acquiring TikTok, which is used by nearly half of all Americans.
