Amazon reportedly cutting 15% of HR staff

Amazon is planning to cut up to 15% of staff in its human resources division.

The affected group, known as the People eXperience Technology (PXT) team, has over 10,000 employees globally and manages recruiting, technology, and HR functions.

Sources said more layoffs are expected in other divisions within Amazon’s core consumer business, though the total number and timing remain unclear.

The move comes as Amazon reduces workforce costs while ramping up spending on AI and cloud infrastructure, with over US$100 billion in planned capital expenditures for 2025.

Earlier this year, the company laid off employees in its consumer devices, Wondery podcast, and AWS units.

Amazon has already cut at least 27,000 corporate jobs since 2022, even as it plans to hire 250,000 seasonal warehouse workers in the US for the holidays.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Potential 15% cut to People eXperience Technology (PXT) would be under 0.1% of Amazon’s total workforce while office job reductions loom larger

  • Amazon employs about 1.56 million people 1. Most work in operations and fulfillment. While planning corporate layoffs, it announced 250,000 seasonal warehouse hires 2.
  • PXT has 10,000+ staff, a small share of the company, and office roles face the cuts 2. Previous 2022-2023 reductions removed 27,000 corporate jobs and were called a high single digit share of office roles, which implies 300,000-400,000 corporate workers 2. A 15% PXT trim near 1,500 people plus more reductions in consumer units would still equal a low single digit share of corporate roles 2. Amazon plans up to $100 billion in 2025 capex for cloud and AI datacenters, while warehouses keep expanding and office teams shrink 2. CEO Andy Jassy said broad AI adoption will lower corporate headcount over time 2.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) regions and planned builds create timing openings for infrastructure vendors in Saudi Arabia, Chile, and Europe

  • AWS runs 120 Availability Zones (clusters of separate data center sites within a region for resiliency) across 38 regions 3. Plans include 10 more zones and 3 new regions in Saudi Arabia, Chile, and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud (EU-focused regions designed for data residency and control) 3. These builds need long lead times for land and power plus fiber and cooling.
  • Recent land buys hint at near-term work for builders and suppliers 4. Parcels include 590 acres in Jefferson Township, Ohio and 430 acres in Covington, Georgia 4. Its private backbone spans more than 6 million kilometers of fiber optic cabling 3. Energy companies and utilities can pursue Amazon’s energy efforts, including nuclear agreements 5 and site-level goals such as net-zero by 2040 in some projects 4. Each AWS region needs at least three physically separate Availability Zones for redundancy 3. That setup multiplies demand and creates recurring revenue for power and cooling plus connectivity vendors across multiple campuses per region 3.
