Amazon recruits gov’t leads for Asia satellite internet push

Amazon.com Inc.’s satellite internet division, Project Kuiper, is looking to expand in East Asia by hiring government sales leads in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.

The job postings suggest that these candidates will focus on developing satellite internet solutions for government clients in these countries.

In December, Taiwanese officials confirmed ongoing discussions with Project Kuiper regarding potential collaboration.

Taiwan is seeking to improve its communication resilience following disruptions to subsea communication cables.

These disruptions were reportedly linked to Chinese fishing vessels amid rising tensions with Beijing.

Amazon has launched 54 of its planned 3,236 satellites for Project Kuiper, which aims to provide residential broadband and connectivity services for governments and businesses.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Amazon’s space race faces critical deadlines amid intensifying competition

Amazon’s Project Kuiper is playing catch-up in the satellite internet market, with SpaceX’s Starlink already having deployed thousands of satellites while Kuiper has launched just 54 of its planned 3,236 satellites 1.

The company faces strict regulatory pressure, as FCC requirements mandate that Amazon deploy at least half of its constellation by July 2026. This timeline will require an aggressive launch schedule using the 83 launches Amazon has contracted 1.

This US$10 billion initiative represents one of Amazon’s largest infrastructure investments, putting the company in direct competition with Starlink, which already serves over two million customers across more than 100 countries 2.

The expansion into East Asian government contracts reflects Amazon’s strategic prioritization of high-value enterprise and government clients while its consumer offering development continues alongside manufacturing scale-up challenges.

Amazon’s multi-launch strategy involving various rocket providers demonstrates the company’s determination to accelerate deployment despite being years behind Starlink in both satellite count and customer acquisition 3.

2️⃣ Taiwan’s satellite internet pursuit reflects growing digital security concerns

Taiwan’s interest in Amazon’s Kuiper represents more than just commercial opportunity. It’s a critical national security strategy to maintain communications resilience against potential Chinese disruption of undersea cables.
