Amazon Prime Day drives $8.3b in day-one sales
Online spending on the first day of Amazon’s Prime Day reached US$8.3 billion across US retailers on June 24, up 5.3% from a year earlier, according to Adobe Analytics, a US software company that tracks ecommerce trends.
Amazon’s sale started on June 24 and runs through June 27, earlier than its usual July timing.
It is also the second straight year the event has lasted four days, not the first, according to Amazon’s history of Prime Day.
The event comes as Walmart and Best Buy are running six-day sales, and Target is offering deals through June 27.
Adobe projects US$26 billion in online spending during Prime week, up 9% year on year, suggesting the boost extends beyond Amazon.
The results may also show what shoppers are prioritising. Survey data showed 25% of planned shoppers intended to stock up on regularly purchased goods, while 21% planned to buy household essentials or higher-priced items they had delayed purchasing.
Adobe also expects buy now, pay later to account for 7.8% of ecommerce spending during the event.
