Amazon to pay $309m to US shoppers in returns settlement

Amazon has agreed to pay US$309 million in a class action settlement related to returns issues in the US, according to court documents filed on January 26, 2026.

The settlement addresses claims that some customers were incorrectly denied refunds or charged despite returning products.

Plaintiffs said they have secured more than US$600 million in refunds for affected customers, separate from the settlement amount.

They also secured over US$363 million in non-monetary relief to improve return and refund processes.

Amazon said it identified a small subset of returns in 2025 where refunds were not issued correctly due to verification issues and took steps to fix the problem.

The lawsuit, filed in 2023, alleges some consumers were unjustly charged despite properly returning items.

The case awaits approval from US District Judge Jamal Whitehead in Seattle.
