Amazon lays off under 100 employees in books division

Amazon has laid off fewer than 100 employees from its Books division to improve operational efficiency.

The company said the affected workers will get full pay and benefits for 60 to 90 days, plus severance.

Amazon clarified that the division’s total headcount remains unchanged, as roles will be repurposed.

This follows the company’s 2022 decision to shut down its physical bookstores.

Despite changes, Amazon’s online book sales remain strong, totaling US$16.9 billion in early 2022.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Publishing industry’s workforce has been shrinking for decades despite revenue growth

Amazon’s layoffs in its Books division continue a long-term trend in publishing employment that predates the digital revolution.

The U.S. publishing industry has experienced a dramatic 40% decline in jobs over three decades, with employment dropping from 91,100 in 1997 to just 54,822 in 2023 1.

This contraction occurred despite industry sales growing to $29.9 billion in 2023, suggesting companies are finding ways to generate revenue with smaller workforces 1.

The pattern reflects broader structural changes in publishing, where corporate consolidation and technological efficiencies have eliminated traditional roles while increasing reliance on freelancers and outsourced work 1.

Amazon’s statement that these eliminated roles will be “repurposed for other parts of the company” aligns with this industry-wide trend of workforce reallocation rather than simple downsizing.

2️⃣ Digital book operations are being reassessed across major tech companies

Amazon’s Books division cuts mirror similar recent actions at other tech giants, suggesting a broader reassessment of digital content strategies.

Apple recently laid off approximately 100 employees in its digital services group, primarily affecting its Books app and Apple News, despite continuing to support these services 2.
